things I want to remember

There he goes, there he goes again.

The Chucks arrived in the literal nick of time. We needed to leave at 9:10 to get Huckleberry to school and they were left on our doorstep at 8:45. Debra at Converse had promised me Huckie would wear them for his first day, just like big brother and Debra meant what she said.

I had him all ready go, wearing his lion shoes that were a close second, and I was praying he wouldn’t remember how he wanted the “tall tops” for his first day. We walked down the stairs and saw the box and I said “Huckie! What do you think this is?” And he got all happy and yelled “MINE CHUCKS!”

I will cry with “mine” becomes “my”.

The thing about having a big brother is that they set the tone for everything a little brother does. Mostly that is great, but sometimes not so much. Max was anxious about school. Huck was not…until he realized Max was anxious about it and you know what? Anxiety can be contagious. Huck suddenly felt he SHOULD be anxious about it when really he was excited. School is Huck’s jam. He is so social and excited to do just about anything I sometimes wish he could go to school all day because he just loves hanging with his buddies and doing stuff.

And let’s be honest, preschool is pretty rad. Paint a little, sing a song, read a book, have a snack, hit the playground; preschool is nice work if you can get it!

Max asked if he could go to school a little bit late so he could walk Huck in and it was so sweet. Just before Huck went into his classroom he said he needed to hold Max’s hand and Max held it tight and told Huck where he had sat in that very classroom. He walked Huck in.

Then Huck fell apart. He came roaring back out crying and I held him tightly, hugged him and told him it would be okay, we would be back soon!

Then we took Max to school and hit Starbucks. Obviously.

At 11:45  my friend KG texted me “almost time to get Huckie and see how his first day went!” I texted back “not till 12:30”

Guess which one of us was right?

I rolled up at 12:15 thinking “why aren’t they on the playground? It’s so nice out!” right as I walked in I realized I wasn’t 15 minutes early, I was 15 minutes late. Way. To. Go. Mom!

All I can say is…at least I messed up the right way with the right child. Max would have been a WRECK. Huck was like “sweet! more time to hang out!” I mea culpa’d to the teacher and staff and let’s just say I won’t be doing that again.

Huck told me he loved school and it was fun and the next morning he said “mommy, is it okay if I don’t miss you when I am at mine school?”

I told him his whole job was to have fun and learn. After pick up (I was early by the way) I asked if he made any new friends. He told me he knew all the girls names. Priorities, people. Huckie has them.

My sweet, snugly, spirited guy is off on his next adventure and feel like one of those instagram girls: Hashtag BLESSED. 2015-05-25 15.04.16-1

Oh Huck, I love you so. Have a wonderful year!

On October 7th Piper rolled over from back to front for the first time! I never want to forget that. What I DO want to forget is that she rolled right off the ottoman and onto the floor. How you say? Well, I’ll tell you. I like to put her on the ottoman and sit on the floor so she can kick and wiggle but I am right there at face level. The better to eat her cheeks with, my dear. Anyway, lightning fast she just up and flipped herself right off. And she was never placed on the ottoman again. Amen.

She is still very quiet, but the other day Max was singing to her her “The player’s gonna play, play, play, play, play” and she smiled and squeaked “ah, ah, ah, ah, ah” imitating Max. It was AWESOME.

The other day as we were driving home from a wonderful birthday party and bonfire at a farm we heard Huck from the backseat cheer with glee “HUCK! YAAAAAAY!!” I’m not sure exactly what he was cheering, unless it was to congratulate himself on covering the van, himself and his carseat in popcorn puke, but it was gleeful nonetheless and adorable and honestly we had the giggles over it for about 20 minutes. We may have also been laughing because the whole van was covered in puke and there were only two options: laugh or cry.

He still wants to hold hands and cuddle, he is my snuggle bug. He still says “mine” instead of my and I will weep when he abandons that. “you want to hold mine hand?” yes, Boo I totally do. He wants me to hold his foot or hand while he is in his car seat, which is sweet but problematic as it’s hard to do that and drive. Also dangerous. So he has to wait until a red light and then I squeeze those toes – because he will not keep shoes on- for all they are worth until the lights change!

Max is doing great at school, his confidence is growing and he is just so sweet! I actually got an email from a mother of a little girl in his class and she said that apparently her daughter was a little lost because they got there a touch late, all the kids all line up together and go into class at once and she had missed it. Max was also a little late that day and they saw him go to her and help her get to class. I don’t think I have ever been so proud. And it was all the better because he didn’t know her father was watching, or that anyone would ever know about it. Just that his friend was lost and getting upset and he took care of her. What a sweetheart!

These three. My whole world and so, so, very loud, crazy-making and utterly delightful

Things I want to remember…

Off to the first pool day of the season. These two…I love them madly. (obviously no driving was done while in this seating arrangement.)

We were on the metro headed to a Nats game and a sweet couple asked Huck who his favorite ball player was and he smiled and said “Max”

He was entertaining everyone at the memorial day barbeque and said decidedly “First you get angry and then you cry.” Thus summing up being two in one sentance.

At that same barbeque Max was telling everyone about how he lost a tooth and the Tooth Fairy ONLY brought him a gold coin. Huck said “The Tooth Fairy is a thief!”

Huck drew a picture of Baby Honey in my tummy.

“I wish I had a stuffed animal of Boo to cuddle when he doesn’t want to cuddle.”

We went to chick-fil-a for lunch on a rainy day and he met an 8 month old baby girl and spent the next 20 minutes making her giggle by letting her grab his nose and playing peek a boo. He is a natural big brother and he is so excited to meet his baby sister. He sings Baby Mine to my belly.

Max is working hard on his writing and spelling. This week he mastered the words “poo poo” “booby” and “butt” I am certain his kindergarten teacher will be thrilled!

And Max finished his third year at preschool/pre-k. He has come so far. From crying every day to learning how to handle his anxiety and trust that I will come back. I am so, so grateful to all his teachers who took the time to comfort him and build him up so that he could enjoy school and have fun learning. I am so very proud of him.
